I Have Never Heard of Entertainment Contractors!
It’s not often that you hear the words ‘entertainment’ and ‘contracts’ in the same sentence. Indeed, these two concepts don’t seem to go hand-in-hand, unless perhaps you are seeing the movie Moneyball and watching Billy Bean negotiate contracts for the Oakland Athletics baseball team.
But believe it or not, there are entities out there known as entertainment contractors. So what the heck are they, anyway? Let’s find out.
What is an Entertainment Contractor?
Entertainment contractors are construction companies that are contracted to build TV sets, movie sets, or playsets, to name a few. These companies are highly specialized and brought in to bring creative ideas to life, whether it be building a massive moving set for the Phantom of the Opera or a replication of the Hollywood sign ‘H’ for a television series.
Entertainment contracting can be a pretty complicated business. To build a thirty-foot-plus tall set for Phantom of the Opera is a tall enough (pun-intended) task in itself, and adding in a nationwide tour doesn’t make the process any easier.
In a situation like this, entertainment contractors are not only tasked with building a beautiful, stunning set that can take the audience’s breath away, but also making it collapsable and transportable by trucks and vans across state lines.
The Business of Entertainment Contracting
Most entertainment contracting companies don’t have the luxury of bidding on bids outside of their particular niche, as the process is just too specialized. While this is true for many other building companies who also specialize, almost none compare to the unique industry that is entertainment.
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic posed particular challenges for entertainment contractors, as touring groups, live shows, and TV/movie production was largely shut down due to quarantine measures. While demand for digital entertainment grew exponentially as people were asked to remain inside, production couldn’t quite keep up, which in turn hurt entertainment contracting companies’ overall business. As the world begins to recover, the industry will undoubtedly bounce back—but not after experiencing hard times like many companies and industries across the United States and the world.
